Books of 2018

Today we list the books of 2018! These are the books that throughout the next year (2019) I will be referencing and recommending. Come 2020 we'll have a new stack I refer back to. But how, seriously how, did I read over 30 books in what was one of the busiest years (maybe the busiest) of my personal and professional life? Let's talk about that for a moment.

Listening to a podcast (from Christy Wright of the Business Boutique) a couple years ago, I remember her saying a friend had mentioned one of his personal goals that year was to get through 25 books. She thought, "...that's a great goal. I should read 25 books this year!" Then she realized, she was writing a book of her own, a mother to two young boys (which I now am as well, as of one week ago on 1/31 when my dear second son was born) had committed to run marathons, and was on a national speaking tour. She had other goals she'd set, that her team had set as well -- all that directly contradicted a 25-book-a-year goal. Pick the right goals for the story you are committed to, was her takeaway.

This is so identifiable. It's easy to hear other's plans - whether personal, financial, or career goals, and pirate them as your own. They're attainable, you think.

25 books a year was not something I saw myself doing, either. When I heard that podcast, I remember where I was. I was in the bathtub with my infant baby, bathing him and me at the same time because that was the only way I could make sure I got a bath in for both of us in the same day -- to do it together. Listening to her story, I remember thinking, yep, not for me either. I was going back to work in a week, and I had no intention of even one book at that time.

Fast forward to 2018, and I was listening to Audible like crazy and commuting about 25 hours a week, working 50 per week.

Yep, Audible. That is how I did it. I'm not going to do a big talk up on Audible. You know what it is, and at this point, if you aren't listening to your books, it's either because your life doesn't allow it, or you aren't interested.

Over the course of 2019, I will be referencing these books and how they have impacted me.

I believe that if you aren't an avid reader/listener, hearing how influential and impactful on your life it can be to mass-consume books, perhaps your mind will be changed!
